Proposed Fines for Educators in Arizona
Legislators have brought back a proposal to fine teachers that attempt to sway students’ political and religious views. The proposal was in response to last year’s “RedForEd” strike in which thousands of teachers wore red shirts and marched on the state Capitol demanding pay increases. As a result of that strike, pay is expected to be increased by twenty percent by next year.
Many legislators believe that last year’s strike and the wearing of red shirts in the classroom was political action aimed to sway students’ views. Other legislators in opposition to this view argue that the movement was unpolitical. The bill that would fine teachers for swaying students is expected to be fully heard by the Senate.
