Utah’s Legislators to Raise Smoking Age Nationally
Two Utah legislators, Representative Chris Stewart and Representative Diana DeGette, introduced a bill to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21 nationwide. This bill would apply to all tobacco products, include e-cigarettes. Utah’s Legislature has already voted this year to raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco products in increments. The legal age will go from 19 to 20 on July 1, 2010, and then to 21 years of age the following year.
Legislators in support of this bill believe that passing this bill is crucial to keeping tobacco products out of the hands of young children. Representative Stewart expressed confidence that the bill would decrease the use of underage tobacco usage.
